US PGA Golf 18-21st May

After a few each-way place finishes, we landed our first winner with Jason Day winning the Byron Nelson, tipped at 16/1 last week. Day played beautifully throughout and his putting on the final day was exquisite to land top spot. Hope you were all on!

Preview

Attention now turns to the second major of the year, the US PGA Championship at Oak Hill Country Club in Pittsford, New York. All the top players are set to be in the field for what is a very competitive tournament. Trends suggest a US based winner as the last seven winners have all been American. Thomas landed the top prize after a play-off in 2022, Mickelson rolled back the years in 2021 and 2020 saw Colin Morikawa destroy the field and win comfortably.

Plenty of golfers come into the tournament in good form with Jason Day winning last week at Byron Nelson, and Day was the last non-US based player to win the US PGA which he did in 2015. Scottie Scheffler was runner up last week and looked in good form with his driving and short game. John Rahm as well heads into the tournament off the back of a Masters’ major win and is playing with plenty of confidence.

Tony Finau landed a PGA Tour win two weeks ago and is showing excellent consistency in his play which brings him firmly into contention.

Rory Mcllroy will have to play a lot better than he did in the Masters here to be among the final pairings come Sunday evening.

Two other US players to keep an eye out for are Brooks Koepka and Justin Thomas. Both are superstars, can never be underestimated in a Major, and have previous wins of this trophy so, should they start the tournament well, they could easily maintain a title challenge.

Best each-way odds

Looking at the best each-way odds in the market, we have 1/5 the odds 12 places with Betfair, 1/6 the odds 12 places with Coral and 1/5 the odds 10 places with Paddy Power and Ladbrokes

Selections

Patrick Cantley at 20/1 with BetVictor (¼ the odds, 5 places) or 18/1 with Paddy Power (1/5 odds, 10 places) – 1pt e/w

Our first pick is Patrick Cantley who finished 3rd in the RBS Heritage a few weeks ago and has plenty of top 20 finishes this season. In the Masters, Cantley was always in the running but ended up tied 14th. He’s knocking on the door of a Major win and is playing excellent golf but must improve his short game to be in contention here, which is possible, given his driving is very strong.

Xander Schauffele at 16/1 with SkyBet (1/5 odds, 8 places) – 1pt e/w

Our second pick is Xander Schaufele who is in red hot form coming into this Major. Runner up at Wells Fargo, looking brilliant in his short game, then 4th at Quail Hollow, again, playing some outstanding and consistent golf. Now is the time for Schaufelle to go one better and take the Major prize this week.
